Learn to Count in Cantonese

Experts suggest that you can introduce the idea of numbers when your child is as young as 12 months by counting small sets of items. So it's time to add a few simple, fun number activities to your daily routine. Here are some ideas to introduce numbers 1 to 10 in Cantonese.

1. Numbers poster. Print out this A3 Numbers poster and count the different shapes with your child. My little one loves to throw the A3 poster on the floor and get on all fours to count the shapes. Don't forget to laminate the poster so you can use it again and again.

2. Mommy/Daddy's little helper. Spend a few extra minutes to stimulate some math mastery during your daily routine. For example, get your child to count the number of items when you unpack your grocery or to count up the toys as you go during clean-up time.

3. Hide and seek. Play a game of hide of seek and help your little one count to ten in Cantonese while a friend or older sibling or parent hides.

4. Count and eat. Write the numbers 1 through 10 * in the bottom of paper cupcake liners, then help your child count out the right number of cereal pieces into each. (You'll need 55 in total to play this.) This game makes a good counting practice and an attractive game especially when your child is allowed to consume all the cereal pieces!

5. Sing a song. The One Two Three / Number Song is great for counting. The repetition in the song expands your child's math vocabulary by letting them hear numerical terms again and again. And this song is also great practice in counting backward. If you're not familiar with this song, this YouTube video can be helpful.

* To introduce the Chinese characters to your child, try writing the numbers in Chinese. It is relatively easy as the characters are made of a few strokes. If you need some help, here's a YouTube video to show how to write numbers 1 to 10 in Chinese.
