How to Introduce Shapes to Kids?

Knowing basic shapes can be useful when kids try to explain objects that they do not know the word for. If they can describe something accurately enough, you will be able to give them the correct word. So how to introduce shapes to kids?

Drawings will be the easiest way to introduce shapes. My toddler loves to watch me draw. Draw the shapes on a large piece of paper or a board - one shape at a time, describe the shape while you are drawing it, introduce the new word and repeat the new word to practice pronunciation.

You can then further practice the vocabulary using this A3 poster. There are 11 shapes on this poster, so you may want to make sure you have gone through them all in your drawings earlier.

When your kids are familiar with the shapes, it's time for some games!

Print out these 11 shape pages and laminate them. Give your kids some whiteboard markers and let them trace the shapes. For smaller children, it would work by simply using their little fingers too!

You can also use the shape pages for Shape Hunt. Lay 4-5 shape pages on the table and get your kids to find objects around the house that have those shapes. They will surprise you with their finds. It is amazing how observant kids can be, noticing the details we adults often tune out or take for granted.

Have your kids found any unusal objects during the shape hunt? Do share in a comment.
