Craft Ideas and Vocabulary for Mother's Day

Mother's day is less than 2 weeks away (for those in UK it's already been and gone though). So it's time to brush up on some Mother's Day relevant vocabulary and get those craft materials out to please that special lady who is wise and always right. ;-)

There are many ways to call a mom in Cantonese, like:

媽咪 (maa1 mi3) - an informal way to call mom

阿媽 (aa2 maa1) - an informal way to call mom

媽媽 (maa1 maa1) - mostly used in written Chinese

母親 (mou5 can1) - a formal way to call mom and mostly used in written Chinese

母親大人 (mou5 can1 daai6 jan4) - a funny, (sometimes) sarcastic way to call mom

媽打 (maa1 daa2) - transliterated English word, mother

Here are some handy phrases and vocabulary for Mother's Day:

I love you 我愛你 (ngo5 oi3 nei5)

Mother's Day 母親節 (mou5 can1 zit3)

Thank you 多謝 (do1 ze6)

heart (sam1)

flower (faa1)

carnation 康乃馨 (hong1 naai5 hing1)

vase 花樽 (faa1 zeon1)

As it is a bit of a tradition to get the kids involved in making some special Mother's Day crafts, I have rounded up some of my favorite Mother's Day craft projects here:

Footprint angel - Moms love their kids little fingers and little toes. This footprint craft is perfect!

Handbag card - Perfect for those fashionista moms!

Colorful lianas - Several empty toilet paper rolls, colored sheets of paper, a pair of scissors and a glue pen are all you need to make these.

Egg carton tulips, Flower bouquet - What is Mother's Day without flowers?
